GVD Leadership

Dr. Hilton Pryce Lewis is the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of GVD Corporation. Hilton founded GVD in 2001, after completing his Ph.D. with Dr. Gleason at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). During his studies, Hilton recognized the commercial value offered by the novel processes that had been developed in Dr. Gleason’s lab, and founded GVD to scale up, develop, and commercialize these processes. Hilton has been the driving force behind the company since inception, and has successfully led the company from a startup endeavor to a thriving technology company serving multiple disparate industries. Hilton received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Natal, South Africa and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.


Dr. Shannan O’Shaughnessy is the Chief Technology Officer for GVD Corporation. Shannan worked with Dr. Gleason in further developing the processes that are at the foundation of GVD’s technology.  Shannan is an expert in coatings and thin films and provides technical leadership for materials and process development across GVD’s current and future product portfolios. Before joining GVD in 2010, Shannan worked in a wide range of industries, including energy, biomaterials, and semiconductors. Shannan is also a successful entrepreneur and was a founding scientist of a medical device company that was launched from MIT, funded, and ultimately acquired by Teleflex Inc., a $1.7B medical device company. Shannan received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.


Charles L. Popkin is the Chief Financial Officer and a Director of GVD Corporation. Charlie is a seasoned financial professional with wide-ranging experience growing companies in fast-paced environments. Charlie was the Chief Financial Officer of The Merallis Company, a technology services firm located in Rocky Hill, CT. Prior to Merallis, Charlie was a founding management member of PQC, Inc., a management services company which he helped grow to $80M in revenue. Charlie also founded Medical Claims Management (MCM), a practice reimbursement management and consulting firm. Earlier in his career Charlie worked as a Senior Consultant for Price Waterhouse and as Senior Accountant for Deloitte &Touche. He is a CPA, has received a B.S. in Accountancy an A.S. in Management from Bentley College and an M.M. in Finance and Business Policy from the J.L. Kellogg School at Northwestern University.

Dr. Karen K. Gleason is the Cofounder of GVD Corporation. Dr. Gleason is the Associate Provost and the Alexander and I. Michael Kasser Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts of Technology (MIT). Previously, Dr. Gleason served in a number of leadership roles at MIT, including Associate Dean of Engineering for Research, Associate Director for the Institute of Soldier Nanotechnologies, and Executive Officer for the Department of Chemical Engineering. Dr. Gleason’s pioneering research in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of polymer thin films is the foundation for GVD’s technology platform. Dr. Gleason is a world expert in this field, having authored more than 250 publications and holding 18 issued US Patents for CVD polymers and their applications in electronics, sensing, microfluidics, energy, biomedicine, and membranes. Dr. Gleason received a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT. Her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering is from the University of California at Berkeley.

James M. Micali is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for GVD Corporation. Mr. Micali is the former Chairman and President of Michelin North America, Inc. Mr. Micali spent 31 years in numerous leadership positions at the company, including General Counsel and Secretary, Executive Vice President, and Head of the Legal and Finance Divisions. In 2001, Mr. Micali was named a member of the Michelin Group Executive Council, the executive board of Michelin's French parent company. Mr. Micali led the dramatic growth of the North America Group, both organically and through acquisitions, most notably through the acquisition of the Uniroyal and B.F. Goodrich tire companies. Mr. Micali presently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Sonoco Products (NYSE), and SCANA Corporation (NYSE), and is the former Chairman of the Board of the South Carolina State Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Micali is a limited partner and senior advisor to Azalea Capital, where he advises on leadership development and strategic planning activities for portfolio companies.
Mr. Micali is a graduate of Lake Forrest College (BA) and received his law degree (JD) from Boston College.
